About

Hello. I’m Katelyn.

When I left undergrad I had a degree that majored in chemistry, minored in studio art. I would go on to pursue chemistry as a full time career, but clay has always been a passion. My desire to play with mud started out as a child, and as you can imagine, I was pretty stoked to find I could still do it as an adult.

I love handbuilding, and being able to put details and shapes onto my pieces for people to look at. I didn’t want it to just be a mug, I wanted it to be a mug with something on it – something that made people smile as they drank their morning coffee.

That’s what started the faces. It was a simple pinch pot with a goofy little nose, simple eyes, and feet. I thought it was going to be a one-off creation, but then we had a class assignment to make a face. As it turns out, I really liked making noses.

It evolved from there. The simple eyes became more complex and the characters grew backstories. As the “gnome-men” grew into extraordinary mustache mugs, so did my studio. I graduated from my kitchen table to my garage where I still do lots of handbuilding, or altering wheel thrown pieces with handbuilding.
